The Litchfield Hills, in the woods and farmland of Morris County, Connecticut, is a region that’s about as old-money as it’s possible to be in North America. Which makes a hotel like Winvian all the more startling. The estate’s main house is classic Northeast, and older than the United States, but it’s the cottages that depart from the Yankee-rustic norm, and in a big way.

Secret Society is a Masonic-style temple, Maritime a lighthouse in the woods, Stone the most luxurious cave you’ll ever sleep in, and Helicopter a stylized hangar with a Connecticut-made Sikorsky coast guard chopper converted into a lounge. Yes, you read that right. All of them, however unconventional, come with all the luxuries you’d expect at this price — fireplaces, flat-screen televisions, sound systems, and bathrooms that just about threaten to make the spa feel a bit redundant.

Just about, but not quite. The spa is a big part of the draw, as is the guests-only fine dining restaurant, as well as the endless array of activities, beginning with bikes left at your cottage’s front door and ending with horseback riding, canoeing and fly-fishing. For at the root of it, however architecturally unconventional, Winvian is about luxurious rural escape — whether you’re staying in a farmhouse, a lighthouse, factory or helicopter, the idea is a timeless one.
