Yes, technically, it’s the Costa del Sol — but try, if you can, to stop those images of grim high-rise developments and package tours from darting across the screen of your imagination. For one thing, this is Málaga, no sleepy sanitized resort community, but a bustling port town. And for another, it’s a Room Mate hotel — Lola, to be exact — and thus a part of the mini-chain of hip, youth-oriented boutique hotels that’s taking Spain by storm.
From outside it could almost be a wry reference to those grim high-rises we tried not to mention above; guest room windows form orderly rows and columns, albeit rather cheerful ones. Interiors, however, are unexpectedly retro, showing a decided LA/Miami influence and adding a certain amount of gloss to the proceedings — it’s a mix of Art Deco, Space Age, and contemporary, more organic forms.
The rooms are compact, but well-formed and well-appointed; this isn’t a place to hole up, anyway, but a base from which to explore. There’s a fine bar and restaurant on premises, and a truly mind-boggling number beyond its walls — from here, a stone’s throw from the port, the best of Málaga is at your feet.
