The popular, cynical journalistic image of Dubai — basically a vision of a golden construction crane, building an air-conditioned skyscraper out of stacks of money — actually sells the place short as a travel destination. There are some hotels that strain the limits of good taste, of course, but that’s the case anywhere. There are also some extremely well-executed luxury hotels, among them the Residence & Spa at the One & Only Royal Mirage.

Ironically this One & Only is three hotels in one, in the upscale residential district of Jumeirah Beach. The one we’re concerned with is the Residence & Spa, the most exclusive and luxurious of the three. Just shy of fifty rooms and suites stand right by the beach, with views of the offshore Palm Island development, a man-made island complex designed to resemble a palm tree when viewed from space.

It’s a faultless example of a luxurious and contemporary Moroccan style, the sparkling new interiors decorated in a lavish riad style, all woven carpets and lattice screens. Appointments are five-star all the way, from modern electronics to classic oversized marble bathrooms. The spa, which includes an enormous hammam-style bath, is miles beyond the usual massage-and-scrub fare, and the Emirates Golf Club is just across the way. No high-rise tower, no sculpted terraforms, and no jockeying for a specious sixth or seventh star — just tasteful, classic luxury, the kind of thing Dubai could do with more of.
