Puigcerdà might not easily roll off the non-Catalonian tongue, but it’s a name worth learning — this little village at the foot of the Pyrénées is a scenic enough spot, and home to a remarkable small hotel, the Hospes Villa Paulita. This storybook Art Nouveau mansion, in the woods by the lakeside, used to be a private vacation home. Now it features two newly built annexes, a fact that might ordinarily be cause for worry — the Hospes group, however, has something of a track record in these matters, having proven more than capable of sensitively mixing heritage properties and new construction.

The interiors, though quite contemporary, are marked by a decided French influence, to go along with the shape of the original building — we’re just miles from the French border here, after all. Today’s contemporary minimalism assimilates Art Deco monochrome quite comfortably, and Louis XVI chairs don’t look anachronistic against these smooth modernist surfaces, they look postmodern. Rooms are not just stylish but exceedingly comfortable as well, and in typical Hospes style there’s a Bodyna spa and a Senzone restaurant — the latter not some inferior house brand but a fine mod-Spanish eatery in its own right. All in all, a good reason to put Puigcerdà on your own personal map.
