The island of Mustique is not the easiest place in the Caribbean to get to — but after decades of tourism and development, the better places are the ones a little bit off the well-worn path. It's an hour-long commuter flight on any of three local airlines from Barbados, though some of Mustique's devotees probably have the means to arrange their own flights — Mick Jagger owns a house on the island, and the likes of Keanu Reeves and members of U2 have been known to frequent the Cotton House itself.
Of course the seclusion isn't the only explanation for the Cotton House's appeal. Don't let the fact that it's a converted sugar mill paint the wrong picture in your head — the only thing that's run-down and rustic about this place is the mill itself. The resort proper is all genteel elegance, with rooms, suites and cottages newly renovated but gently weathered, with mosquito-netted four-poster king beds and private terraces or verandahs overlooking the Caribbean and the Grenadines.
The cottages and guest houses sprawl across the property, and there's no shortage of privacy, but all of the guests will cross paths in the Great Room of the main house, an English-style drawing room used for dining and afternoon tea. Some seaside resorts are so unrelentingly casual that you could pass the entire stay in a bathrobe, but don't be surprised if the Cotton House makes you feel like cleaning up a bit — you never know who's coming to dinner.
