Many of New Zealand’s most famous hotel properties are imposing mountain lodges or adventure-sports meccas; those less adventuresome among us, though, may prefer the quiet life on offer at a place like Brooklands Country Estate. Here, 80 minutes to the south of Auckland, lies a hundred-year-old country farm converted into a rural luxury hotel. The surrounding farmlands are today a forested parkland, its paths and gardens inviting endless strolling, and the elegant old farm house is now a ten-room hotel, an intimate guest house where guests congregate on the veranda with a view of the croquet lawn and the woods beyond.
Included in the rate is a four-course dinner, served in an outdoor pavilion surrounded by greenery or in the elegant dining room. Afternoon tea is enjoyed out on the verandas and patios or, in winter, around the fireplaces in the farm house’s living and dining rooms. Hotel facilities include an outdoor pool and tennis court, and even a conference room for those who can’t leave their business behind.
